Dear Friend,
Picture this: In a small European village, a beloved sage would vanish each Friday afternoon. His followers whispered that he ascended to heaven to prepare for Shabbat. One week, a skeptic secretly followed him. Disguised as a peasant, the sage carried wood into the forest, chopped logs, and brought them to the home of a destitute widow with five children. He lit a fire, unpacked food and clothing, and left her with words of comfort. When the villagers pressed the skeptic—“Do you believe now that our master goes to heaven?”—he answered softly, “Perhaps even higher.”
True goodness is not carried out in a blaze of glory—it’s in the quiet acts that often go unseen. Each of us, with our strengths and even our weaknesses, carries the responsibility to care for one another. Through such giving, we touch the divine, ascending higher than heaven.
